Brief history of
SOGETSU Mercer Island Branch
The branch was introduced beginning with
the opening of the Sogetsu classes by Mrs. Mitsuko Hakomori at the
Mercer Island Community Center in 1983. The Sogetsu Study Group was
established in 1990 and Mrs. Hakomori was appointed as Chairman by
Iemoto Hiroshi Teshigahara. We were granted Branch status in March 2001
and the Charter was signed by Iemoto Hiroshi Teshigahara just prior to
his passing away. Mrs. Hakomori was appointed as Director. The branch
has 33 active members including 20 with teacher's diplomas.
Biography of our
branch director
Mitsuko Hakomori,
Director of Sogetsu Mercer Island Branch, studied Ikebana under her
mother's tutelage from childhood and achieved the rank of Sogetsu
teacher at 18. She was given the professional name "Kohen"
()
meaning "Rainbow
Garden." Her mother was Director of the Sogetsu Sendai Branch and active
in Headquarters events. Mitsuko assisted her mother in teaching and
also taught at the Sendai High School. Even after coming to the United
States and busy with raising a family, she kept up her studies with
Sogetsu Headquarters and reached the highest rank of "RIJI". In
addition to teaching ikebana, she actively participated in ikebana
exhibitions and demonstrated extensively, including the Sogetsu Mercer
Island Annual Exhibitions and Pioneer Square Gallery Exhibitions. She is
creative as well as innovative and looks at the whole presentation as
well as individual arrangements at our shows.
Mitsuko Hakomori is
great with composition, colors, lines, space and harmony. Her students
respect and love her, and are amazed at how with her touch or two our
arrangements become focused and whole.
